Blog Post #11: Bridge to Present
- What did you find interesting about the history of the Sisters of Notre Dame?
St. Julie applied her whole life to the establishment and success of the Sisters of Notre Dame. The goal to educate young women during the late 1700s was one that was not supported by many, and St. Julie, despite all her obstacles, never gave up. For a person to have that much dedication and resilience during an oppressive time is incredible. The Sisters of Notre Dame have an amazing history of resilience and faith. They were able to establish the first all-girls college in California. Another fact I thought interesting was St. Julie's method of providing an education with tuition for wealthy girls, in order to fund a free school for the poor.
- What is something that you heard from the Alumnae Panel that stuck with you and why?
The alumnae's words of having balance in your life really stuck with me. Once alumni shared her regret, that she wished she would have studied more. After hearing this, I started to worry, I wanted to ensure that I studied to the best of my ability. However, another alumnus said she wished she had been more carefree and not have stressed so much about work. These two conflicting ideas really stressed me out, until one spoke about having balance. I realized that I needed more balance in my life. I really want to strive for a more balanced high school life. I want to work harder in school, but at the same time allow myself to take a break from it and enjoy a stress-free life while I can.
3. What does it mean to you to be a part of the Notre Dame Community?
Being apart of the Notre Dame Community means that I have a certain responsibility to uphold in the world. Having a top-tier education with great opportunities is something that not many have. I feel that being part of the ND Community means that whatever I do in life, I must remember to give back and always help others. Notre Dame highlights the importance of kindness, charity, and hard work, which is something I am grateful to have been taught. The work of St. Julie is a constant reminder of the resilience and faith we must strive to have. Our community was built on those ideas and being a part of it means we implement those ideas in our life.
- When you leave Notre Dame High School, what do you think are some values that will stay with you?
When I leave Notre Dame, I will always remember the lessons I have learned here. Having been here for only two school years, I have already realized many values. Having a strong moral compass, faith, working hard, and resilience are some of the ones I have focused on recently. Kindness should always be a priority, we never know what other girls are going through. I know I will never forget to give back to the community, and always look to help others. I have learned the importance of hard work, and that you won't accomplish much without it. I hope for the rest of my time at ND, I will pick up and learn more values that will stick with me through life.
I chose this photo of St. Julie as a reminder of her life's work. Her legacy lives on as she overcame hardships due to illnesses and threats during the French Revolution. Her resilience and dedication to the Sisters of Notre Dame have allowed us to attend NDB today and become prepared for the world.
