Blog Post #2: Bible Archaeology
I learned that the Shroud of Tourin could be the real burial cloth of Jesus. I never knew that The Shroud of Tourin existed, and to learn that it has been studied and debated is very interesting. Wether or not it is the actual burial cloth of Jesus, it shows that people are willing to investigate anything related to him. It signifies the belief and faith people have in Jesus and his historical or spiritual existence. I also didn't know he was buried in cloth and that the cloth showed signs of torture and crucifixion. (National Geographic) Even if this didn't prove his historical existence, the investigation shows how he is considered a historical figure.
I learned about the King of Judea, Herod, and how he was the one who sent out the order to kill all babies under two. Herod was scared that Jesus would challenge his authority and asked multiple times for the three kings to reveal his location. And that is what led to the order of having babies killed because he couldn't find Jesus. I never knew this event in history was relate to Jesus and how in Moses life story had similar events of baby boys being killed. I also learned about Pontius Pilate as a historical figure and how he was responsible for Jesus's death. Jesus overall had many threats and interesting events happen in his life and they are historically significant in the sense it shows what led to other events.
I found it interesting that he was such an influential teacher. It must have been so hard to gain a following with no advanced ways of communication. His large influence over so many people is significant because of the ancient and undeveloped times he lived in. Although it is horrible, the suffering he went through caught my attention because of how much he had to go through. Even though he was divine, he was also human which means he stayed humble and suffered just like humans do. Jesus's story and legacy, as a whole, is very fascinating to me
