Blog Post #10: Growth

1. Which event that you learned about from the Church History textbook presentations did you find most interesting and why?
The most intriguing event in Church History, for me, was the Eastern Schism in 1054. Even though this was my presentation, I found it super interesting because I have family on both sides of the Christian churches. Understanding how it all started with Iconoclasm and Filioque and then led to the separation, helped me understand the different perspectives of each Church. The Eastern Orthodox Church wanted an abolishment of all Icons and believed the holy spirit descended from the father through he son. While the Catholic church described it as from the father and from the son. Another difference is that the Catholic Church has a Pope while the Orthodox has a Vicar of Christ (Shahin, Gloria, and Joanna Dailey).

  1. Which person whom you learned about from the Church History textbook presentations did you find most interesting and why?
Charlemagne was definitely an interesting person in Church History. His devotion to Christianity and his belief in the importance of education is really rare for an emperor. The spread of Christianity in Europe is a big part of Charlemagne's life. However, it wasn't all peaceful, he forced a lot of conversions on the people he conquered. He established a school in his palace where he invited the best scholars and brought a lot of enlightenment to the west. Charlemagne was one of the first Christian emperors and was responsible for a lot of the spread of Christianity in Church History (Shahin and Dailey 77).

  1. If you end up being known as an influential figure in history, what do you want to be remembered for?
If I were to be an influential figure in history, I would only want to be remembered for being selfless and helping many people who are less fortunate. This would inspire others to do the same and remember that you don't have to be wealthy or powerful to give back to the poor. I also would want to be a reminder that anything is possible when you have faith in God, and that we need to take the gift of free will more seriously. Many people wonder how there can be so much evil in the world when God is good, but its because he gives us the gift of free will. It's the most powerful gift someone could receive, and using it responsibly is our purpose in life. Also, A lot of young people don't understand how lucky they are to have a great education and a safe home. Being able to remind those who are fortunate to help the less fortunate would be a great thing to be known for.
  1. How have you personally experienced growth (either mentally, emotionally or spiritually) after your own challenges in life?
I have definitely experienced growth in my life after hardships. I strongly believe that things happen for a reason, wheater they are good or bad. Unfortunately, when the bad does happen, it is hard to remember that they mean something and can help us grow. When I do experience a challenge or a hardship, I push myself to overcome it in a way that will allow me to grow. Usually, my smaller challenges, like exams, push me to become more responsible, determined and mature. However, when I receive a bad grade, it is hard to become motivated to be determined. Overcoming obstacles in your life increase your resilience and can allow you to achieve even greater things.

(Faith: Believing and Pleasing God.)

I chose this photo to represent Growth because to grow we must take leaps of faith, and overcome hardships and challenges. Obviously, there is a leap of faith in the photo and there is a challenge, jumping a great length to another cliff. When we overcome the challenge with faith, we grow and achieve something great.
